Understanding the Phases of the Moon

A simple explanation of Moon phases, lunar orbit, sunlight, waxing and waning, new Moon, full Moon and why phases are not caused by Earth’s shadow.

The Moon seems to change shape from night to night. Sometimes it is a thin crescent, sometimes a half circle, sometimes a bright full disk. The Moon itself is not shrinking, growing or being eaten by darkness. What changes is the amount of the Moon’s sunlit half that we can see from Earth. Moon phases are a simple idea once the geometry becomes clear, but they are often misunderstood because the sky gives us only a two-dimensional view.

The Moon Does Not Produce Its Own Light

The Moon shines because it reflects sunlight. Like Earth, it has a day side and a night side. At any moment, roughly half of the Moon is lit by the Sun and the other half is dark. The important point is that Earth observers do not always face the same portion of the lit half. As the Moon orbits Earth, the angle between the Sun, Moon and Earth changes, and the visible shape changes with it.

The New Moon

A new Moon occurs when the Moon is roughly between Earth and the Sun. The side facing Earth is mostly the night side, so the Moon is difficult or impossible to see in the bright daytime sky. This does not mean the Moon has vanished. It is still orbiting Earth, but the illuminated half is facing mostly away from us. Solar eclipses can only happen near new Moon, but most new Moon’s do not produce eclipses because the Moon’s orbit is tilted.

Waxing Phases

After new Moon, a thin crescent appears. This is the waxing crescent, meaning the visible illuminated portion is growing. The Moon then reaches first quarter, when we see about half of its disk lit. The name first quarter refers to the Moon being one quarter of the way through its phase cycle, not to the amount of the surface visible. After that comes waxing gibbous, when more than half appears lit but the Moon is not yet full.

Full Moon and Waning Phases

A full Moon occurs when Earth is roughly between the Sun and Moon, so the side of the Moon facing Earth is fully illuminated. After full Moon, the visible illuminated portion begins to shrink. This is called waning. The Moon passes through waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent before returning to new Moon. The cycle continues because the Moon keeps orbiting Earth while sunlight continues to illuminate half of it.

Why Earth’s Shadow Is Not the Cause

Many people think Moon phases are caused by Earth’s shadow falling on the Moon. That is incorrect for ordinary phases. Earth’s shadow causes a lunar eclipse, which happens only during special alignments at full Moon. Regular phases happen because of viewing angle. A crescent Moon is not a Moon covered by Earth’s shadow; it is a Moon whose sunlit portion is only partly visible from our position.

The 29.5-Day Cycle

The lunar phase cycle, from one new Moon to the next, takes about 29.5 days. This is called a synodic month. It is slightly different from the time the Moon takes to complete one orbit relative to the background stars because Earth is also moving around the Sun. The result is a repeating pattern familiar across cultures: crescent, quarter, gibbous, full and back again.

Why Phases Matter

Moon phases matter for astronomy, calendars, tides, night visibility and cultural traditions. A full Moon brightens the night sky and can make faint stars harder to see. A crescent Moon can be used to understand orbital geometry. Traditional calendars in many cultures track lunar cycles. The Moon therefore connects everyday skywatching with deeper ideas about motion, light and perspective.
