The alphabet should be admired without being mythologised. It is not the only sophisticated form of writing, and it did not make every society that used it wiser or freer. But it did create an unusually adaptable bridge between sound and sign. Its history shows that small technical changes can have vast social consequences. A few signs can alter trade, religion, law, empire, education and memory. The alphabet’s greatness lies in its mobility. It could move from mine workers to merchants, from merchants to poets, from poets to philosophers, from empires to churches, from manuscripts to print, from print to code.

Its evolution is therefore one of humanity’s grand civilisational stories. It proves that culture advances not only through battles and rulers but through quiet tools that change daily life. The alphabet made speech portable. It gave memory a body. It allowed people to speak after death, across seas, across centuries and now across screens. In that achievement, the alphabet remains one of history’s most enduring revolutions.
