The role of education in society extends far beyond teaching children to pass examinations or preparing adults for employment. Education is one of the major institutions through which societies transmit knowledge, develop skills, organise childhood, form citizens, preserve culture, create professional standards and distribute opportunities between generations.
People experience education personally. They remember teachers, grades, friendships, examinations and qualifications. But schools, colleges, universities, vocational institutions, libraries and adult-learning systems exist for collective reasons as well. A society that wants doctors must preserve medical knowledge and train new practitioners. A democracy needs citizens capable of reading laws, evaluating claims and understanding public institutions. A technologically complex economy requires workers who can learn, calculate, communicate and adapt.
Education therefore performs several functions simultaneously.
It preserves what previous generations discovered while giving new generations tools to challenge what previous generations believed. It can expand social mobility while reproducing inequalities already present in families and neighbourhoods. It can strengthen social cohesion while segregated or unequal education can deepen division.
The central question is consequently not simply “Is education important?”
Few societies dispute that.
The more useful questions are what education is expected to accomplish, who receives high-quality education, what schools actually teach beyond the formal curriculum, and whether educational opportunity can be converted into meaningful opportunity outside school.
What Is the Role of Education in Society?
Education provides organised mechanisms for transferring knowledge, skills, values and ways of reasoning from one generation to the next.
This transfer is necessary because every generation inherits a world it did not create. Mathematics, scientific methods, engineering principles, medical knowledge, legal systems, literature, historical records and professional techniques have accumulated over centuries. Without institutions capable of preserving and teaching them, each generation would have to reconstruct enormous amounts of knowledge independently.
But education is not merely storage.
Societies also use educational institutions to prepare people for participation in economic, political and social life. UNESCO's 2026 overview describes education as a lifelong process that develops knowledge, skills and values while strengthening communities and enabling people to participate more fully in society.
From a sociological perspective, education therefore has at least six broad functions: knowledge transmission, skill development, socialisation, citizenship formation, opportunity allocation and social adaptation.
Each function can produce public benefit.
Each can also produce inequality when access or quality is distributed unevenly.
Education Preserves Accumulated Knowledge
No modern society can function if important knowledge disappears every generation.
A surgeon begins training with centuries of accumulated anatomical and clinical knowledge. An engineer learns mathematical and physical principles developed long before they were born. A lawyer studies precedents, statutes and institutional procedures inherited from earlier generations.
Education allows societies to compress historical learning into individual development.
A student can acquire in years knowledge that humanity took centuries to develop.
Schools provide the foundations. Universities, vocational institutes, professional programmes, research organisations and libraries extend the process into specialist knowledge.
This transmission function also creates continuity during periods of rapid social change. Technologies may change quickly, but a functioning society still needs institutions capable of preserving reliable knowledge long enough for people to build on it.
Education therefore connects generations.
But transmission does not mean unquestioning preservation.
Knowledge itself changes.
Science is revised when new evidence appears.
Historical interpretations change as new records and perspectives are examined.
Professional standards change when technologies or risks change.
An education system therefore has to preserve knowledge and maintain mechanisms for correcting it.
Literacy Changes People's Relationship With Institutions
Literacy is one of the clearest examples of education producing both individual and social capability.
Reading allows people to understand contracts, medication instructions, government notices, news reports, employment documents and legal rights.
Writing allows people to communicate beyond immediate conversation and maintain records across time.
These abilities become especially important in societies where public services, finance and commerce increasingly require written or digital interaction.
UNESCO's 2026 SDG 4 monitoring estimates that global adult literacy increased from about 81% in 2000 to 88% in 2024, while youth literacy rose from 87% to 93%. Yet progress remains highly unequal, and roughly one-quarter of young people in low-income countries were still estimated to lack literacy in 2024.
Literacy therefore affects independence.
Someone unable to read a contract depends on another person to explain it.
Someone unable to interpret health information has less control over medical decisions.
Someone unable to navigate written digital systems may technically have access to a public service while being practically excluded from using it independently.
Education reduces this form of information dependence.
Numeracy Makes Complex Economic and Administrative Life Possible
Numeracy receives less public attention than literacy but performs a similar social function.
Individuals use numerical reasoning when comparing prices, calculating interest, reading statistics, managing household budgets or evaluating risk.
Workplaces rely on measurement, accounting, inventory, quality control and data.
Engineering, science, medicine and technology require much more advanced mathematical capability.
A society with widespread foundational numeracy can distribute complex tasks among far more people than one in which mathematical knowledge remains concentrated in a small professional elite.
This creates a wider base from which technical specialisation can develop.
The same skill also matters for citizenship.
Public debates increasingly involve percentages, probabilities, economic indicators, polling, public-health statistics and graphs.
A citizen who cannot interpret basic numerical evidence is more vulnerable to misleading claims even if they are highly literate in ordinary language.
Education Builds Human Capital and Economic Capacity
One of education's most obvious functions is preparing people for productive work.
Economists often describe education as an investment in human capital: knowledge and skills that increase people's productive capacity.
Modern economies require workers capable of reading instructions, operating equipment, communicating with colleagues, using digital systems and learning new methods as technology changes.
More specialised occupations require longer training.
Doctors, engineers, nurses, teachers, accountants, electricians, software developers and technicians cannot normally acquire their full professional competence through casual observation.
Education therefore supports economic productivity in two ways.
First, it equips individuals with skills that allow them to perform work.
Second, it increases the number of people capable of understanding and adopting new technologies.
OECD analysis describes high-quality education and relevant skills as contributing to higher earnings, productivity, innovation and sustained economic growth while also producing wider social benefits.
But the relationship is not automatic.
Years spent in school do not guarantee useful learning.
A qualification cannot create jobs that do not exist.
And training people for occupations without considering labour-market demand can produce educated unemployment.

Education Is Not Only Job Training
Reducing education to employability creates an unnecessarily narrow model of what societies need from educated people.
Individuals are workers for only part of their lives and identities.
They are also parents, consumers, patients, neighbours, citizens and participants in cultural life.
A person may need to evaluate a political claim, interpret a medical risk, understand a legal document, manage household finances or decide whether information online is credible.
Education therefore also develops capabilities whose value cannot always be measured through salary.
History can help citizens understand how institutions formed.
Science can help people distinguish evidence from assertion.
Literature can expose readers to experiences beyond their own.
Civics can explain rights and political structures.
The broader social value of education comes partly from producing people capable of navigating complex shared institutions, not merely labour markets.
Education Is One of Society's Main Socialisation Institutions
Children learn social behaviour long before formal schooling, particularly through families.
Schools extend that process.
Students learn explicit content, but they also learn how institutions work.
They arrive at particular times.
They follow schedules.
They encounter authority outside the family.
They cooperate with peers.
They compete.
They wait for turns.
They meet deadlines.
They are evaluated according to standards.
Sociologists refer to this broader process as socialisation.
The formal curriculum teaches mathematics, science, language or history.
The hidden curriculum includes expectations concerning punctuality, obedience, independence, competition, teamwork and institutional behaviour.
This hidden curriculum is not automatically positive.
Schools can teach cooperation and fairness.
They can also normalise excessive hierarchy or unequal expectations.
Students therefore learn not only from what schools say.
They also learn from how the institution behaves.
Education Helps Create Citizens
Citizenship requires more than legal nationality.
Democratic participation requires enough knowledge and confidence to understand institutions, evaluate competing claims and participate in collective decisions.
Students may learn this formally through history, civics and political education.
But they also learn citizenship informally.
A school that allows reasoned disagreement teaches something different from one that treats questioning as disobedience.
A school council can give students practical experience of representation.
Classroom discussion can teach that disagreement does not have to become hostility.
UNESCO's Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development, adopted by all 194 UNESCO Member States in 2023, identifies knowledge, skills, values and behaviours needed for peaceful and responsible participation in increasingly interconnected societies.
This is why civic education should not be reduced to memorising constitutional facts.
Citizens also need practice evaluating evidence, listening across disagreement and understanding how rights apply when interests conflict.
Critical Thinking Has Become a Civic Survival Skill
Modern citizens encounter more information than previous generations could have imagined.
That does not necessarily make them better informed.
Search engines, social media, political advertising, influencers, AI-generated content and algorithmic recommendations expose people to claims whose quality varies enormously.
Education therefore increasingly has to teach information judgment.
Who produced this claim?
What evidence supports it?
Is the source independent?
Does a statistic actually prove the conclusion attached to it?
Could an image or quotation be misleadingly presented?
UNESCO's current education framework explicitly includes media and information literacy and digital capabilities among the skills needed in contemporary education.
This function extends beyond avoiding misinformation.
People with stronger reasoning skills are better equipped to distinguish certainty from probability, expert consensus from isolated opinion and genuine evidence from rhetorical confidence.
Education Can Increase Social Mobility
One of the most powerful promises attached to mass education is that a person's future should depend less completely on the family into which they were born.
Qualifications can give someone access to occupations unavailable to previous generations.
A child from a low-income household may become a doctor, engineer, teacher or entrepreneur because schooling and higher education create routes into specialist knowledge.
This is one reason public education became associated with meritocracy.
In principle, ability and effort could matter more than inherited status.
That possibility is real.
But education can increase mobility only if students receive sufficiently comparable opportunities to learn and if labour markets reward the qualifications they acquire.
Universal enrolment does not automatically produce equal opportunity.
Education Can Reproduce Inequality Too
The same educational system that promises mobility can reproduce advantage.
Children enter school with different resources.
Some have parents able to provide tutoring, books, stable housing, quiet study space, technology and professional networks.
Others may face overcrowded housing, family financial stress, poor nutrition or unstable access to transport.
Schools themselves may differ in funding, teacher experience, infrastructure and peer composition.
The 2026 UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report shows how large these inequalities remain. In low-income countries, for every 100 young people from the richest fifth who complete upper-secondary education, only about 13 from the poorest fifth do so. Rural disadvantage is also substantial: roughly 30 rural young people complete upper secondary education for every 100 urban youth in low-income countries.
This is why education cannot be evaluated only by asking whether schools exist.
The more demanding questions are who enters, who learns, who completes and who can convert education into later opportunity.
Education Systems Allocate Credentials
Schools and universities do more than teach.
They classify.
Examinations, certificates and degrees tell employers and institutions something about a person's preparation.
This can serve an important public purpose.
Societies reasonably expect doctors, engineers and other professionals to demonstrate competence before performing work whose errors can seriously harm people.
Credentials can therefore protect standards.
But credential inflation can create another problem.
Employers may begin requiring degrees for jobs that previously did not require them, even when the underlying work has not changed enough to justify the new qualification.
Education then functions partly as a selection mechanism rather than a pure skill-building mechanism.
A society can end up requiring people to purchase increasingly long educational pathways simply to compete for the same relative position.
Education Helps Create Social Cohesion
Schools bring young people from different households into shared institutions.
They can create common reference points through language, history, civic knowledge and everyday routines.
UNESCO describes education as capable of strengthening intercultural understanding, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and social cohesion when educational environments deliberately support inclusion.
This does not mean schools should make everyone culturally identical.
Healthy cohesion does not require erasing difference.
It requires enough shared institutional trust and common knowledge for people with different backgrounds to cooperate.
School belonging matters here.
PISA 2022 found that across OECD countries about 75% of students reported feeling that they belonged at school, while roughly one in five reported feeling lonely, left out or like an outsider.
A school that successfully teaches mathematics while making particular groups feel permanently excluded is fulfilling only part of its social function.
Education Can Deepen Social Division
Education is not automatically cohesive.
Schools can be separated by income, ethnicity, religion, neighbourhood or language.
If advantaged groups attend well-resourced institutions while disadvantaged populations remain concentrated in weaker schools, education can reproduce social boundaries instead of weakening them.
Curriculum matters too.
A national history that systematically erases minority experiences can make common education feel like cultural domination.
Language policy can determine which students feel recognised and which must abandon part of their identity to participate.
This means educational cohesion depends on fairness and inclusion, not merely having children sit inside institutions called schools.
Common schooling creates cohesion only when people believe the institution genuinely belongs to them as well.
Education Transmits Culture and Collective Memory
Schools teach more than technical knowledge.
Language, literature, history, music, art, ceremonies and traditions communicate what societies consider worth remembering.
Curriculum therefore participates in the construction of collective memory.
This makes curriculum politically sensitive.
Which historical episodes deserve attention?
Which authors are considered canonical?
Which languages are supported?
How are colonialism, war, religion, inequality or national conflict explained?
There is no curriculum that includes everything.
Selection is unavoidable.
The reasonable objective is not pretending curriculum is neutral.
It is ensuring that selection is evidence-based, intellectually defensible and open to revision.
Education Can Also Challenge Inherited Culture
Education has a conservative function because it transmits knowledge and values.
It also has a critical function because it teaches people how to question inherited claims.
Scientific education allows students to test explanations against evidence.
Historical study can reveal that institutions presented as timeless were created under particular circumstances.
Ethical reasoning can expose conflicts between inherited norms and contemporary ideas of rights.
Education therefore creates a productive tension.
A society needs enough continuity to transmit culture.
It also needs enough intellectual freedom for each generation to examine whether inherited ideas remain defensible.
An education system that only preserves can become indoctrination.
One that remembers nothing cannot sustain cumulative knowledge.
Schools Create Social Networks
Educational institutions connect students to people beyond their families.
Classmates, teachers, mentors, alumni and professional peers can influence aspirations and opportunity.
These relationships form part of what sociologists call social capital.
A student may discover a profession because a teacher introduces it.
A university classmate may become a future business partner.
An apprenticeship can connect a young person to an occupational network.
This means educational inequality can operate through networks as well as classrooms.
Students in prestigious institutions may gain access not only to stronger teaching but also to influential peers, internships and employers.
A society serious about equal opportunity therefore has to look beyond curriculum into the wider opportunity structures surrounding institutions.
Early Childhood Education Can Influence Later Inequality
Educational inequality begins before children enter primary school.
Language exposure, nutrition, health, play, parental time and access to early learning vary substantially among households.
High-quality early childhood education can help children develop language, cognitive and social capabilities before formal schooling begins.
This does not mean preschool can erase every disadvantage created outside school.
But early education matters because later schooling builds on capabilities children already possess.
The 2026 UNESCO monitoring report shows why access remains important: only about 60% of primary-school students worldwide were estimated to have received at least one year of pre-primary education, once children already enrolled early in primary school were separated from the indicator.
Early childhood policy is therefore part of educational equity, not merely childcare policy.
Education Influences Health
Education is associated with many dimensions of health.
People with stronger literacy can interpret health information more easily.
Education can improve employment prospects and income, which influence housing, food and healthcare access.
Schools can also provide nutrition, vaccination, physical activity, health education and links to social services.
OECD evidence describes higher-quality education as associated with longer and healthier lives as well as broader social participation.
The relationship should be interpreted carefully.
Education does not independently cause every observed health difference.
Family resources, neighbourhood conditions and other factors influence both education and health.
Still, education affects people's ability to understand and navigate increasingly complex healthcare systems.
Education Supports Innovation
Innovation depends on a small number of highly specialised researchers.
But it also depends on much broader capabilities.
New technologies need engineers to design them, technicians to install them, workers to operate them, managers to organise production and consumers capable of using them.
Universities create research.
Vocational institutions train technicians.
Schools provide foundational mathematics, literacy and scientific understanding.
Innovation therefore depends on an educational ecosystem rather than isolated geniuses.
Countries that invest heavily in advanced research without building broad foundational skills can create technological islands that much of the population cannot participate in.
Vocational Education Has a Distinct Social Function
University is not the only route to expertise.
Modern societies need electricians, machinists, automotive technicians, nurses, construction specialists, laboratory technicians and many other skilled occupations.
Vocational education connects learning more directly to practical competence.
Systems become distorted when social status makes university education appear inherently superior to technical training.
The real question should be which educational route develops valuable capability for the work someone wants to perform.
A highly skilled technician may contribute more economic value than a poorly prepared graduate holding a general degree with little occupational relevance.
Educational prestige should not obscure occupational need.
Higher Education Creates Specialist Knowledge
Universities perform several functions at once.
They train doctors, lawyers, researchers, teachers and other professionals.
They conduct research.
They preserve specialist knowledge.
And ideally, they provide institutional space for inquiry that is not limited to immediately profitable questions.
This is why academic freedom matters.
A society sometimes needs researchers to investigate claims that governments, corporations or prevailing public opinion would prefer not to have examined.
Universities therefore contribute to society partly by producing knowledge and partly by protecting processes through which accepted knowledge can be challenged.
Education Helps Create Professional Standards
Certain occupations carry unusually high consequences when performed badly.
An incompetent surgeon can kill a patient.
A poorly trained engineer can create unsafe structures.
A lawyer who misunderstands procedure can seriously damage a client's interests.
Organised education allows professions to define bodies of knowledge and establish minimum standards of competence.
This protects the public.
But professional gatekeeping also needs scrutiny.
Requirements should reflect genuine competency needs rather than being used unnecessarily to restrict entry and protect existing practitioners from competition.
Educational standards work best when they protect competence rather than status.
Teachers Turn Institutions Into Lived Experience
Curriculum documents cannot teach anyone by themselves.
Teachers interpret them.
Two schools using the same official curriculum can produce very different experiences depending on teacher knowledge, expectations, feedback and classroom climate.
Teachers also decide how disagreement is handled, whether struggling students receive additional explanation and whether mistakes become opportunities to learn or occasions for humiliation.
This makes teacher quality and working conditions central educational questions.
UNESCO currently estimates that the world would need roughly 44 million additional teachers by 2030 to achieve universal quality primary and secondary education.
The challenge is therefore not merely constructing classrooms.
Education depends on trained people capable of making those classrooms intellectually productive.
Assessment Shapes What Education Becomes
What a school system tests strongly influences what teachers and students prioritise.
If examinations overwhelmingly reward memorisation, schools may devote enormous time to memorisation even while policy documents praise creativity, critical thinking and collaboration.
Assessment therefore sends a stronger behavioural signal than curriculum rhetoric.
Good assessment should evaluate knowledge while encouraging learners to apply, analyse and explain it.
This does not require abandoning factual knowledge.
Critical thinking without factual foundations quickly becomes shallow opinion.
The challenge is combining knowledge acquisition with reasoning rather than treating them as opposites.
Digital Technology Expands Access and Creates New Inequality
The internet has dramatically expanded access to educational material.
Students can watch lectures from distant universities, use digital libraries, take online courses and communicate with teachers across geographic boundaries.
Adults can learn without returning to full-time campus education.
But access to a website is not the same as access to effective education.
Learners still need devices, connectivity, language, digital literacy, accessible design and often guidance.
UNESCO's latest SDG 4 monitoring shows how uneven advanced digital capabilities remain. Among countries with recent reporting, only about 24% of adults in the median reporting country could verify online information, while programming ability was much rarer. UNESCO also cautions that these data disproportionately represent middle- and high-income countries.
Digital education therefore has a double potential.
It can reduce geographic barriers.
It can also deepen inequality between people capable of using digital systems effectively and those who cannot.
Artificial Intelligence Changes What Education Needs to Teach
AI intensifies this problem.
When software can generate text, code, images and explanations rapidly, education cannot simply compete by asking students to reproduce information machines can generate more quickly.
Students still need foundational knowledge because they cannot evaluate an AI-generated answer without knowing enough about the subject to recognise errors.
But education increasingly needs to teach verification, problem framing, judgment and responsible tool use.
The question is not whether students should ever use AI.
The deeper educational problem is determining which cognitive capabilities should remain actively developed even when machines can perform parts of the task.
A calculator did not remove the need to understand arithmetic.
Search engines did not eliminate the need for knowledge.
AI likewise increases rather than eliminates the value of knowing enough to judge what the system produces.
Education Helps Societies Adapt to Technological Change
The social role of education does not end at graduation.
Technology can make skills obsolete long after formal schooling ends.
Workers may need to learn new software, production methods or professional regulations.
Digital public services can create new literacy requirements for older citizens.
This makes lifelong learning increasingly important.
Adult education, workplace training, vocational retraining, libraries and online courses can reduce the risk that technological change permanently divides society into people who can adapt and people whose skills have been left behind.
A learning society therefore needs education systems that extend beyond childhood.
Education Can Expand Women's Agency
Access to education has especially important consequences when social institutions have historically restricted women's choices.
Education can expand employment possibilities, health knowledge, awareness of legal rights and participation in public institutions.
It can also influence marriage and fertility decisions.
But schooling alone does not guarantee agency.
A highly educated woman may still face labour-market discrimination, unsafe transport, restrictions on property rights or social expectations that prevent her from using her education.
The true social benefit therefore appears when education can be converted into real options.
Disability Inclusion Tests the Meaning of Equal Access
Enrolment is not sufficient if the institution remains unusable.
A student with a mobility disability may technically be enrolled while classrooms remain physically inaccessible.
A visually impaired student may attend school while receiving materials they cannot read.
Assessment systems may disadvantage students whose needs do not fit assumptions about the “average” learner.
Inclusive education therefore requires accessible buildings, materials, technology, teaching methods and assessment.
This reveals a broader principle.
Equality cannot be measured solely by whether everyone has been given the same formal opportunity.
It must also consider whether people can actually use it.
Education Can Be Used for Indoctrination
The social power of education has a darker side.
Because schools shape knowledge, historical memory and citizenship, governments and movements can use education to promote propaganda or unquestioning loyalty.
Textbooks can omit inconvenient history.
Teachers can be required to present political ideology as unquestionable fact.
Minority languages or identities can be deliberately suppressed.
The risk of indoctrination is precisely why good civic education should include evidence, rights and permission to question authority.
Education for citizenship should prepare people to participate in the state.
It should not require intellectual submission to whoever currently controls it.
Education Policy Shapes Social Geography
Where schools are built, how admissions operate and how they are funded can influence where families live.
Parents may pay higher housing prices to enter desirable school zones.
Selective schools can concentrate advantaged students.
Transport systems determine which institutions children can realistically reach.
Language rules can influence which communities use particular schools.
Education policy therefore helps shape neighbourhood segregation and mobility.
It is not simply an administrative subsystem operating independently from housing or urban planning.
Public Funding Makes Education a Distributional Institution
How education is financed determines how much family wealth translates into educational opportunity.
If school funding depends heavily on local property wealth, prosperous areas may be able to provide dramatically better resources than poorer communities.
National or regional funding formulas can reduce those differences by directing more resources toward students with greater needs.
The 2026 UNESCO GEM Report finds that education systems have increasingly adopted funding mechanisms intended to direct additional resources toward disadvantaged regions, schools and households, although fewer than one in ten countries were assessed as having a sufficiently strong overall equity focus.
Funding therefore does more than pay salaries.
It determines how strongly society allows educational opportunity to follow inherited geography and wealth.
Libraries Extend Education Beyond Enrolment
Education is broader than formal schooling.
Public libraries allow children, adults, job seekers, migrants and retirees to continue learning outside enrolment.
They provide books, digital access, research resources and spaces where people can learn without purchasing access to private institutions.
Libraries demonstrate something important about education as a social institution.
Learning does not end when a certificate is issued.
A society that expects citizens and workers to adapt throughout life needs public learning infrastructure beyond schools.
Education Organises Childhood and Family Life
Mass schooling also performs a less obvious organisational function.
School schedules structure the day for entire communities.
They influence when parents work.
Transport systems revolve around them.
Meals may be provided through them.
Schools connect families to health, counselling and welfare programmes.
This role became especially visible during widespread school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
When schools closed, societies did not lose only classroom instruction.
Families suddenly had to reorganise childcare, work, meals, digital access and supervision simultaneously.
The disruption demonstrated that schooling is embedded deeply inside the organisation of modern family and economic life.
Education Creates a Common Reference Base
Large societies contain people who differ in religion, class, ethnicity, geography and political opinion.
Meaningful public debate nevertheless requires some shared concepts.
Citizens need enough common language concerning science, history, law and institutions to disagree intelligibly.
Common education can help provide those reference points.
This does not require everyone to reach identical conclusions.
Indeed, an educated democracy should expect disagreement.
The goal is to ensure people disagree while understanding enough of the same institutional and evidential framework for deliberation to remain possible.
Education Also Shapes Society's Time Horizon
Education is inherently future-oriented.
A child studies today for capabilities that may become useful years later.
Families invest time and money because they expect education to create future opportunity.
Governments finance teachers and schools because social returns may take decades to appear.
This creates an implicit social promise:
effort now will create believable opportunities later.
That promise matters.
If schools are unreliable, learning is weak or graduates repeatedly discover that qualifications have little connection with opportunity, trust in the educational bargain weakens.
Students may rationally ask why they should invest years in a system that cannot deliver plausible future benefits.
