Ankita Bhandari’s Parents Detained at 4 AM, Issue 24-Hour Ultimatum
Ankita Bhandari’s parents were detained by Delhi Police at around 4 am during an overnight protest near India Gate, escalating a fresh confrontation over their demand for answers in the unresolved “VIP angle” surrounding their daughter’s 2022 murder case.
Virendra Singh Bhandari and Soni Devi had been protesting in Delhi against the appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam as Sikkim Governor, demanding that the appointment be put on hold until the Central Bureau of Investigation completes its inquiry into allegations connected with the case. They were later released after being taken into custody in the early hours.
Following the detention, Ankita’s father gave the government a 24-hour ultimatum, warning that the family would intensify its agitation if its demand was not addressed. Ankita’s mother separately threatened to begin a hunger strike, saying the family would continue protesting until it received clarity over what it describes as the unresolved VIP connection.
Overnight India Gate protest ends with early-morning detention
The family’s demonstration continued through the night near India Gate, drawing political leaders and supporters who joined their demand for further investigation.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had met the family earlier during the protest, while Congress leaders criticised the government’s handling of the case and expressed support for Ankita’s parents.
Delhi Police eventually moved to end the sit-in in the early hours. Ankita’s parents and several others were detained at around 4 am before later being released.
The timing of the police action quickly became part of the controversy, with opposition leaders questioning why the parents of a murder victim seeking further investigation were detained during an overnight protest.
Police action at public demonstrations, however, can be based on restrictions governing assemblies, security requirements and use of sensitive public spaces. The specific legal grounds invoked in relation to the India Gate detention will therefore remain important in assessing the incident.
For Ankita’s parents, the detention has added another grievance to a campaign that has continued for years despite the conviction of three men for their daughter’s murder.
Family demands action before Dushyant Gautam assumes Governor’s office
The immediate trigger for the latest protest is Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s appointment as Governor of Sikkim.
Ankita’s parents have publicly demanded that the appointment be halted until the CBI completes its investigation into the alleged VIP angle connected with the murder case.
Gautam, a former BJP national general secretary who previously held responsibility for the party’s Uttarakhand organisation, has been named by the family while discussing its allegations.
Those allegations have not been established by a court, and Gautam has denied any involvement in Ankita Bhandari’s murder or the alleged circumstances surrounding it.
That distinction is crucial. The family is demanding that the investigation be completed before Gautam takes up a constitutional position; it is not the same as a judicial finding that he was involved in the crime.
The appointment has nevertheless brought renewed national attention to questions that Ankita’s parents say were never adequately answered during the original murder investigation and trial.
The unresolved ‘VIP angle’ remains at the heart of the case
Ankita Bhandari was 19 years old when she disappeared in September 2022 while working as a receptionist at Vanantra Resort near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.
Her body was later recovered from the Chilla canal.
Resort owner Pulkit Arya, manager Saurabh Bhaskar and employee Ankit Gupta were accused of murdering her. All three were subsequently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The prosecution case included allegations that Ankita had been pressured to provide “special services” to an influential guest and had resisted those demands.
References to an unidentified VIP subsequently became one of the most controversial elements of the case.
Although the murder trial resulted in convictions, Ankita’s family has consistently argued that the identity and potential role of the alleged VIP were never satisfactorily established.
That question is now the subject of renewed scrutiny through the CBI investigation.
The inquiry is significant because it could either uncover additional evidence supporting the family’s allegations or determine that there is insufficient evidence connecting any additional person to the circumstances surrounding Ankita’s murder.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi join family’s campaign
The family’s latest protest has also become a national political issue.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi met Ankita’s parents at India Gate and publicly backed their demand for a complete investigation.
Congress leaders have criticised both Gautam’s appointment and the detention of Ankita’s parents, arguing that a grieving family seeking answers should be allowed to protest peacefully.
The BJP, meanwhile, has defended the handling of the Ankita Bhandari case by the Uttarakhand government.
Party leaders have pointed to the rapid arrests of the accused, the Special Investigation Team investigation, prosecution and eventual life sentences as evidence that the state acted decisively.
The two sides are therefore focusing on different aspects of the case.
The government and BJP emphasise that the men responsible for Ankita’s murder have been convicted. Her parents and opposition parties argue that the criminal convictions did not resolve the separate question of whether an influential individual was connected to events preceding her death.
Hunger-strike threat raises stakes after detention
The 4 am detention has transformed the latest demonstration from another protest over the case into a more immediate political confrontation.
Ankita’s mother’s warning that she may begin a hunger strike creates the possibility of a prolonged protest if the government does not respond.
Her father’s 24-hour ultimatum also places a clear deadline on the family’s demand concerning Gautam’s gubernatorial appointment.
If the Centre does not act, the family has indicated that it could widen its campaign and seek broader public mobilisation.
Any hunger strike involving the parents of a murder victim whose case has already attracted national attention could significantly increase political pressure on both the Centre and the Uttarakhand government.
What happens next
Three developments will now determine where the controversy goes.
The first is whether the government responds to the family’s 24-hour ultimatum or proceeds with Gautam’s appointment without any change.
The second is whether Ankita’s parents begin the threatened hunger strike or organise a broader protest campaign following their detention.
The third — and ultimately the most consequential — is what the CBI concludes about the alleged VIP angle.
The murder convictions resolved the question of who was held criminally responsible for Ankita Bhandari’s killing.
They did not end her parents’ search for an answer to the question that has followed the case since 2022: was an influential person connected to the circumstances that led to their daughter’s death, and if so, who was it?
The overnight detention at India Gate has now pushed that unresolved question back into the centre of national attention.
