What else strengthens bones besides calcium and vitamin D?
Resistance exercise, weight-bearing activity, adequate protein, healthy body weight, avoiding smoking, limiting excessive alcohol, maintaining muscle strength and treating osteoporosis when necessary all contribute.
Are calcium and vitamin D enough to treat osteoporosis?
No. They are part of the nutritional foundation, but people at high fracture risk may require specific osteoporosis medications.
When should I talk to a doctor before taking calcium or vitamin D?

But bone strength is not determined by how many milligrams or international units can be packed into a supplement.
It depends on adequacy.
Enough calcium.
Enough vitamin D.
Enough protein.
Regular loading of the skeleton through appropriate activity.
Healthy muscles and balance.
Management of medical conditions that accelerate bone loss.
And, when osteoporosis has already developed, treatment that matches the actual fracture risk.
The most useful question is therefore not:
“Should I take calcium and vitamin D?”
It is:
“Am I getting enough calcium and vitamin D for my age and circumstances—and if not, what is the safest way to correct the gap?”
That distinction turns two heavily marketed nutrients back into what they actually are: essential parts of a much larger bone-health system.
