Pregnant Journalist Alleges Rahul Gandhi Pushed Her During Delhi Protest; Congress Denies Claim
A political controversy erupted in Delhi after journalist Richa Parashar alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed or pulled her during the Opposition’s protest-related activity near the Supreme Court.
Parashar, who said she is three months pregnant, told media outlets that she was covering the event when she extended her microphone towards Gandhi in the middle of a crowded and chaotic situation. According to her account, she was pulled and pushed, lost her balance and fell on the stairs.
The Congress has denied that Rahul Gandhi assaulted her and has described the allegation as politically motivated propaganda.
Journalist says she fell while reporting
Parashar said she was performing her reporting duties when the incident occurred during the Opposition protest connected with the ongoing electoral-roll controversy.
She alleged that she was physically jostled after trying to approach Gandhi with her microphone and subsequently fell.
She was later admitted to a hospital in Delhi. Her pregnancy has intensified public reaction to the incident, although the precise sequence of physical contact remains disputed.
Video footage circulating from the scene is now central to competing claims about what happened.
Congress rejects allegation
Congress has denied that Rahul Gandhi deliberately pushed the journalist.
Party supporters have challenged the interpretation of the incident and argued that the area was extremely crowded, with politicians, security personnel, journalists and protesters moving through a restricted space.
The dispute has therefore become not only about whether physical contact occurred, but whether any contact visible in footage was deliberate or simply part of the surrounding crowd movement.
That distinction remains important because the journalist’s allegation and Congress’s denial directly contradict each other.
BJP attacks Rahul Gandhi
The BJP has seized on the allegation to criticise Gandhi and Congress, particularly because the journalist has said she is pregnant.
The controversy quickly moved beyond the original incident and became part of the wider political confrontation surrounding the ongoing protests in Delhi.
Political reactions, however, should not be treated as proof of what occurred.
The most reliable assessment will depend on unedited footage from multiple angles, eyewitness accounts and any formal complaint or police investigation that follows.
Incident comes amid tense Delhi protests
The alleged incident occurred during a period of heightened political activity in the capital over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders have been participating in protests, marches and legal action connected with the issue.
Delhi Police has separately registered FIRs following a Rahul Gandhi-led INDIA bloc protest over alleged barricade damage and demonstrations conducted without permission.
The tense environment surrounding these protests has resulted in heavy police deployment, repeated detentions and restrictions in central Delhi.
What the video can — and cannot — establish
Short clips from crowded political events can be difficult to interpret without seeing what happened immediately before and after the visible moment.
A video may establish proximity, movement or physical contact, but determining intention generally requires additional context.
For that reason, Editors Outlook is treating Parashar’s account as an allegation rather than stating that Rahul Gandhi assaulted her as an established fact.
Similarly, Congress’s denial does not by itself resolve what occurred.
What happens next
It remains to be seen whether Parashar files a formal police complaint and whether authorities seek additional CCTV or media footage from the area.
Any medical documentation, eyewitness testimony and longer video recordings could also become important.
Until additional evidence emerges, the central facts remain that Parashar has publicly alleged she was pushed during the event, while Congress has denied wrongdoing.
The controversy is likely to remain politically significant because it comes amid already escalating tensions between the Opposition, the Election Commission and the government over the continuing Delhi protests.
