How to Improve Reading Comprehension: Read Actively

How to improve reading comprehension is not mainly a question of reading more slowly or concentrating harder on every sentence. A person can pronounce every word, follow the grammar and reach the end of a chapter without being able to explain what the author actually argued.

Comprehension requires the reader to construct a usable mental model from the text. Important ideas have to be identified, connected and interpreted. Vocabulary and background knowledge have to be brought into the process. Readers make inferences about information the author leaves unstated and continuously check whether their interpretation still makes sense.

This is why good reading looks mentally active even when the reader appears physically still.

Evidence-based guidance from the U.S. Institute of Education Sciences supports explicit comprehension practices such as questioning, summarising, monitoring understanding, clarifying confusion, making inferences and using prior knowledge. Its more recent guidance for students in grades 4–9 also emphasises building word and world knowledge alongside comprehension strategies.

The practical goal is therefore not merely to finish more pages.

It is to reach the end of a text with an explanation in your own mind that survives after the page is closed.

Read With a Purpose and a Map

Reading becomes harder when you do not know what information deserves attention.

Before beginning, decide what you are trying to get from the text.

You might be learning a concept for an examination, evaluating an argument, finding evidence for research, following instructions, comparing two positions or simply trying to understand a subject for the first time.

Those purposes require different kinds of attention.

If you are evaluating an argument, you need to distinguish claims from evidence and identify assumptions. If you are learning a biological process, sequence and causation matter. If you are reading a report for work, the most important information may be the decision, risk or action required rather than every supporting detail.

Turn the purpose into one question before you begin.

For example:

Why did this policy fail?

What causes inflation in the author's model?

What are the stages of this process?

What evidence supports the conclusion?

A question gives the reading somewhere to go. It creates a criterion for deciding which information is central and which can remain secondary.

Then preview the text.

Look at the title, headings, introduction, conclusion, diagrams, tables and section labels. In an academic paper, inspect the abstract and overall structure. In a textbook, notice how the chapter is divided. In an argument, look for where evidence and conclusions appear.

IES guidance on reading comprehension specifically recommends helping readers recognise and use the organisational structure of a text, because understanding how information is arranged supports comprehension and memory.

Previewing is not a substitute for reading.

It gives the details you encounter later somewhere to attach.

Think of the difference between receiving twenty pieces of furniture in an empty field and receiving the same furniture inside a house with labelled rooms. Structure helps you decide where each piece belongs.

This becomes increasingly important as texts become difficult.

A reader who understands that a chapter is organised as problem → causes → evidence → proposed solution has a framework for interpreting each paragraph. Without that framework, the same chapter can feel like a sequence of disconnected facts.

Vocabulary and Background Knowledge Set the Ceiling on Comprehension

Reading strategies cannot fully compensate for a text in which too many important words or concepts are unfamiliar.

Suppose a paragraph explains monetary policy using terms such as liquidity, nominal interest rate, inflation expectations and real yield. A reader who has to reconstruct the meaning of every term is using substantial mental effort before reaching the relationships among the concepts.

Vocabulary therefore affects more than word recognition.

It determines how much attention remains available for understanding the larger argument.

IES's adolescent literacy guidance gives explicit vocabulary instruction its strongest evidence rating and recommends repeated exposure to new words in multiple contexts rather than learning definitions once in isolation.

When reading independently, do not automatically stop for every unfamiliar word.

First ask whether the term is necessary for understanding the passage.

Sometimes context supplies enough meaning to continue. If a word is central, technical or repeatedly used, check it carefully in a reliable dictionary, glossary or subject-specific source.

Then connect the word to the idea in which it appeared.

A definition such as:

Arbitrage: simultaneous buying and selling to profit from price differences

is more useful when attached to an example than when memorised in isolation.

The same principle applies to background knowledge.

Readers understand new material partly by connecting it to what they already know. Current IES intervention guidance explicitly recommends building both world knowledge and word knowledge to help students make sense of complex text.

This explains why a paragraph about cricket strategy is easier for an experienced fan than for someone who has never watched the sport, even if both readers have similar general reading ability. The expert already possesses concepts into which new information can fit.

Background knowledge also explains why reading within one subject gradually becomes easier.

Your first article about monetary policy may require frequent searches.

After reading twenty reliable articles, terms and causal relationships begin appearing repeatedly. What initially required deliberate decoding becomes available as prior knowledge.

Improving comprehension therefore has a long-term component: learn more about the world you are trying to read about.

There is no strategy that can instantly replace missing knowledge.

Question, Infer and Connect While You Read

Passive reading often feels smooth.

That smoothness can be deceptive.

Sentences make sense individually, so the reader assumes the whole passage has been understood. Only later—when asked to explain it—does the weakness become visible.

Questions interrupt that illusion.

While reading, periodically ask:

What is the author's main point here?

Why was this example included?

What evidence supports the claim?

How does this paragraph connect with the previous one?

What changed between these two stages?

What is the author assuming?

What would have to be true for this conclusion to follow?

IES guidance identifies questioning as a research-supported comprehension strategy because generating and answering questions directs attention toward important ideas and forces readers to process relationships within the text.

The questions do not need to be written after every paragraph.

The purpose is not to transform reading into an interrogation ritual.

Use questions when the text makes an important move: introduces a new concept, presents evidence, changes direction or reaches a conclusion.

Inference requires similar activity.

Authors cannot state every connection explicitly.

Consider:

The roads were wet when Maya left the building. Everyone entering the lobby was closing an umbrella.

The text never directly states that it was raining, but the inference is strongly supported.

More difficult texts require the same process at a higher level. Historical writing may imply motives through several pieces of evidence. Scientific writing may expect the reader to understand why one result challenges a hypothesis. Legal reasoning may rely on connecting a principle established earlier with facts presented later.

IES describes inference as generating information necessary for meaning that is not directly stated in the text.

The important limitation is that inference must remain constrained by evidence.

A reasonable inference connects textual clues and relevant background knowledge.

It is not permission to replace the author's argument with whatever interpretation feels plausible.

Ask yourself:

What in the text allows me to conclude this?

If you cannot identify supporting evidence, you may be speculating rather than inferring.

Connections among ideas matter just as much.

After several paragraphs, mentally complete sentences such as:

This happens because…

This example supports the earlier claim by…

This differs from the previous argument because…

The consequence of this process is…

Comprehension deepens when information becomes a network rather than a list.

Notice Confusion Early and Repair It

One of the biggest differences between productive and unproductive reading is not whether confusion occurs.

Everyone becomes confused.

The difference is whether the reader notices.

A weak reading session can continue for several pages after understanding has already broken down. The eyes move, sentences are pronounced internally and pages turn, but the new information is being attached to a faulty or missing interpretation.

IES explicitly treats monitoring, clarifying and fixing up as a comprehension strategy. Readers should notice which parts they understand, identify why a section is unclear and choose an appropriate repair such as rereading or using background knowledge.

Develop a simple stop signal.

After an important paragraph or subsection, ask:

Could I explain what I just read?

If the answer is no, diagnose the reason before rereading automatically.

Perhaps one technical term is missing.

Perhaps a pronoun such as this or they refers to an earlier concept you have lost.

Perhaps the sentence contains several embedded clauses and needs to be broken into smaller parts.

Perhaps the author assumes background knowledge you do not possess.

Perhaps you understand every sentence but cannot see why the paragraph exists.

Or perhaps the problem is simpler: your attention drifted.

Different failures require different repairs.

If the vocabulary is missing, look up the central term.

If the sentence is structurally complex, identify its subject, main verb and claim before adding the qualifying phrases.

If a reference is unclear, trace it backwards.

If background knowledge is missing, find a concise explanation of the prerequisite concept.

If you lost attention, return to the last point you can explain rather than restarting an arbitrary number of lines earlier.

Rereading becomes much more useful when it has a diagnosis.

Otherwise, readers often repeat the same unsuccessful process and hope that recognition will eventually turn into understanding.

Dense material should also be read in smaller conceptual units.

Do not force yourself to finish ten difficult pages before checking whether they made sense. Read one subsection or even one complete idea, pause and reconstruct it.

The harder the text, the smaller the useful chunk may become.

Technical examples deserve special treatment.

If a textbook demonstrates how to solve a problem, reading the worked solution can create a powerful illusion that you understand the procedure. Try reproducing the next step before looking.

For an argument, identify claim → evidence → reasoning.

For a process, identify stage → mechanism → consequence.

For narrative, track character → motive → event → consequence.

Different texts require different mental structures.

Summarise From Memory and Let the Gaps Diagnose You

One of the strongest practical tests of comprehension is simple:

Look away from the text and explain what it said.

After a meaningful section, close the book, scroll away from the paragraph or cover the page and produce a short explanation.

Do not try to reproduce the author's sentences.

Ask what you understood.

For example:

The author argues that inflation can persist because workers and firms form expectations about future prices, which then influence current wage and pricing decisions.

If you can produce a coherent explanation, you probably constructed at least a basic mental model.

If you remember only scattered phrases—inflation, expectations, wages—you may have recognised the vocabulary without understanding the relationship.

Now reopen the source and compare.

What did you omit?

What did you distort?

Did you reverse a causal relationship?

Did you turn a qualified conclusion into a certainty?

Did you remember an example but forget the principle it illustrated?

This correction stage matters.

Retrieval is not valuable because memory is always accurate. It is valuable partly because the attempt exposes what is missing.

IES recommends summarising or retelling as part of comprehension instruction, and its reciprocal-teaching materials combine summarising with questioning, clarifying and predicting.

For independent readers, however, summarising should remain selective.

You do not need a summary after every paragraph.

Summarise when enough information has accumulated to form one meaningful unit.

Your summary should be much smaller than the source.

If a three-page section produces three pages of notes, you probably copied rather than compressed.

This is where note-taking becomes useful.

Better notes transform the text.

Instead of copying:

“The Great Depression began in 1929 and resulted from…”

you might write:

Why did the banking crisis deepen the downturn? → failures destroyed deposits, reduced credit and increased fear, reinforcing falling spending.

The second note has reorganised the information around a relationship.

For research reading, notes can distinguish:

Claim

Evidence

Method

Limitation

Why it matters

For conceptual study, a diagram or causal chain may work better than prose.

For comparison, use a small table.

For something you need to remember later, convert the idea into a question that can be answered without looking.

The UNC Learning Center's guidance on reading journal articles similarly recommends condensing and paraphrasing, explaining key ideas without reproducing the author's wording and recording the reader's own questions alongside the source.

The note should therefore contain evidence that thinking occurred.

Highlighting alone rarely proves that.

Adapt the Method to the Text Instead of Using One Reading Speed

Not every sentence deserves the same amount of attention.

This is one reason advice such as “read slowly” is incomplete.

An introduction explaining background may be skimmed relatively quickly when you already know the context. A paragraph containing the central causal argument may deserve several passes.

The appropriate reading method depends on both difficulty and purpose.

When reading a research paper, you may first identify the research question, methods, main results and limitations before examining technical details.

When reading history, chronology, causation, source evidence and competing interpretations may matter most.

When reading philosophy or law, individual definitions and logical transitions can carry enormous weight, making slower sentence-level analysis useful.

When following instructions, sequence and conditions become critical.

When reading literature, character perspective, imagery, ambiguity and patterns across scenes may matter more than reducing every page to a factual summary.

Reading comprehension is therefore not one universal technique.

It is the ability to choose cognitive tools appropriate to the text.

Previewing, questioning, summarising and monitoring are useful because they help readers control that process rather than proceed automatically.

You should also distinguish comprehension from memory.

A passage can make perfect sense while you are reading it and still be largely forgotten a week later.

If the information needs to survive for an examination, professional task or future research, later review and retrieval become necessary.

Reading creates understanding.

Remembering that understanding requires revisiting and using it.

This distinction prevents another common mistake: rereading the same chapter repeatedly because it feels increasingly familiar.

Familiarity is not the same as being able to explain or apply the idea independently.

If long-term learning matters, ask questions from memory, explain the topic aloud, solve a new problem or revisit the material after a delay rather than depending only on additional exposure.

Strategies Work Best When the Foundations Work

Comprehension strategies are powerful, but they cannot solve every reading difficulty.

A reader who struggles to recognise words accurately and fluently is forced to devote substantial attention to decoding. That leaves less mental capacity for constructing meaning.

A reader with very limited vocabulary faces a similar burden.

A reader missing the subject knowledge assumed by the author may comprehend individual sentences without understanding the argument they collectively form.

IES's 2022 guidance for struggling readers in grades 4–9 therefore does not recommend comprehension strategies in isolation. It combines them with decoding, fluency, vocabulary and world knowledge, recognising that reading comprehension depends on several systems working together.

For many competent adult readers, the main problem is not decoding.

It is passive reading.

But if reading remains unusually difficult across ordinary texts despite active strategies, the solution may require strengthening foundational skills rather than adding more elaborate note-taking systems.

Long-term improvement therefore comes from two directions.

First, practise the process of comprehension: define a purpose, identify structure, ask questions, make inferences, monitor confusion and summarise.

Second, expand the resources comprehension depends on: vocabulary, subject knowledge and reading fluency.

The more you know, the more future texts can connect with something already established.

Reading itself becomes one of the mechanisms through which later reading becomes easier.

A Practical Reading-Comprehension Routine

A useful routine can remain simple enough to repeat.

Before reading, decide why you are reading and write one question you want the text to answer. Preview the title, headings and overall structure. Identify any prerequisite concepts you obviously lack.

While reading, follow the argument rather than merely the sentences. Ask questions at important transitions. Mark only information that serves your purpose. When the meaning becomes unclear, stop and diagnose the problem instead of mechanically continuing.

After a meaningful section, look away and explain the key idea in your own words.

Then check the source.

Correct what you missed.

For difficult texts, shorten the distance between these checks.

After reading, reconstruct the whole text without immediately looking back.

What was the main argument?

What were the most important supporting ideas?

What evidence mattered?

Which concept remains unclear?

Can you provide your own example?

Can you explain how the sections connect?

Then connect the reading to its purpose.

If you were studying, answer questions or apply the idea.

If you were researching, record how the source affects your own argument and preserve enough citation information to return to it.

If you were reading for work, identify the decision or action required.

If you were evaluating an argument, write what you accept, what you question and why.

This final step converts comprehension into something usable.

The routine may initially feel slower than simply moving from the top of a page to the bottom.

In practice, passive speed can be false economy.

Reading thirty pages that leave no coherent mental model may be less efficient than actively processing fifteen and remembering what they mean.

Better reading comprehension does not come from staring harder at sentences.

It comes from repeatedly asking whether those sentences have become meaning in your own mind.

Define the purpose.

Build the structure.

Connect new ideas with vocabulary and knowledge.

Question what you read.

Notice when understanding breaks.

Repair it.

Then close the page and see what remains.

That is the point at which reading becomes comprehension.
