Screen Time and Eye Strain: What Screens Do to Your Eyes — and What They Don’t

Long periods of screen use can make the eyes feel dry, tired or blurred, largely because near focus is sustained and blinking often decreases. The symptoms are real, but they should not be confused with permanent damage…

Screens can make healthy eyes feel unhealthy

After several hours at a computer, the symptoms can feel surprisingly physical: burning, dryness, heaviness around the eyes, intermittent blur, headache or a sense that focusing has become harder.

These symptoms are commonly grouped under digital eye strain or computer-related eye strain.

The National Eye Institute acknowledges that prolonged screen viewing can tire the eyes and recommends regular visual breaks. The important distinction is that discomfort from ordinary screen use is not the same thing as evidence that the retina or optic nerve is being permanently damaged.

Digital eye strain is usually a problem of sustained visual demand, blinking, dryness, lighting, distance and ergonomics—not a diagnosis of irreversible eye disease.

Near work asks the focusing system to stay engaged

Looking at a nearby screen requires the eyes to maintain accommodation, the focusing process that keeps near objects clear.

That is normal. The same system is used for books, sewing and other close work.

The difficulty comes when near focus is sustained for long periods with few breaks. Some people develop temporary blur or a sensation that the eyes need time to refocus at distance.

This is one reason the National Eye Institute promotes the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for roughly 20 seconds.

The rule is not a medical law. It is a memorable way to interrupt prolonged near focus.

Blinking often decreases during screen use

Dryness is another major part of digital eye strain.

When people concentrate on screens, they often blink less frequently or incompletely. That gives the tear film more time to evaporate between blinks.

The result can be burning, grittiness, watery eyes, fluctuating vision or contact-lens discomfort.

Room air matters too. Fans, air-conditioning and low humidity can increase evaporation.

The practical response is simple: blink deliberately at times, take breaks, avoid directing dry air toward the face and seek assessment if dryness is persistent or severe.

Screen distance and text size matter

A screen that is too close can increase near-focusing demand. A screen that is too far away may encourage leaning forward or squinting.

Text that is too small creates the same problem.

Instead of forcing the eyes to work harder, enlarge the text and position the screen at a comfortable viewing distance.

The correct distance is not identical for every person because screen size, prescription, age and task differ.

Comfort is more useful than copying an exact centimetre measurement from an ergonomic poster.

Lighting should reduce glare, not create a dark-room contrast

A bright screen in a dark room creates a large contrast between the display and the environment. Reflections from windows or overhead lighting can also make text harder to see.

Adjusting room lighting, screen brightness and display angle can reduce visual strain.

The goal is not to make the screen extremely dim. It is to keep the screen comfortably readable without forcing the eyes to adapt constantly between a brilliant display and a dark surrounding space.

Cleaning smudges and dust from the screen can also improve contrast.

The 20-20-20 rule is a break strategy, not a cure

NEI continues to recommend the 20-20-20 approach in its 2026 Healthy Vision Month materials.

Its value is behavioural: it reminds people to interrupt continuous near focus.

Someone who forgets the break at exactly twenty minutes has not harmed their eyes. Likewise, a person with persistent dry-eye disease, uncorrected refractive error or another eye condition may still have symptoms even when following the rule perfectly.

Breaks reduce one source of strain. They do not replace diagnosis when symptoms persist.

Glasses prescriptions can become obvious during screen work

Small refractive errors may be barely noticeable during ordinary daily activity but become tiring during prolonged computer use.

Astigmatism, farsightedness or an outdated prescription can increase focusing effort. Presbyopia—the age-related loss of near-focusing ability—often becomes particularly obvious in screen users during their forties and beyond.

If words remain blurred, headaches recur or the person moves closer and closer to the screen, an eye examination may reveal a correctable vision issue.

That is different from the screen causing the refractive error in the first place.

Blue light is not the whole explanation

Blue-light-blocking glasses and screen filters are widely marketed for digital eye strain.

Visible blue light is part of the light emitted by screens, but ordinary digital-eye-strain symptoms are more directly explained by prolonged near work, reduced blinking, dryness and ergonomics.

Reducing screen brightness late at night may help with sleep timing because light exposure can affect circadian rhythms. That is a sleep issue, not proof that normal screen blue light is damaging the retina.

A product should therefore not be assumed necessary simply because it is labelled ‘eye protection.’

Children and screens raise a different concern: near work and outdoor time

For children, the eye-health discussion extends beyond temporary strain.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, has become increasingly common in many populations. Research suggests that more time outdoors is protective against the development of myopia, while large amounts of near work may contribute to risk.

That does not mean a tablet directly ‘ruins’ a child's eyes.

It means childhood visual habits should include outdoor time, breaks from prolonged near work and appropriate vision assessment when a child squints, sits unusually close or struggles to see at distance.

Posture and eye strain can reinforce each other

A low laptop screen can make a person bend the neck forward. Small text may encourage leaning toward the display. Neck and shoulder fatigue can then be experienced as part of the same ‘screen headache.’

That makes workstation setup relevant.

Raising a laptop screen and using an external keyboard, adjusting the chair, keeping the monitor roughly in front of the user and enlarging text can reduce both visual and musculoskeletal demand.

Digital eye strain is often a whole-workstation problem rather than an eyeball-only problem.

When it is probably more than ordinary screen fatigue

Ordinary digital eye strain usually improves with rest or changes in screen habits.

Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, marked redness, new double vision, flashing lights, a curtain-like shadow, a sudden shower of floaters or neurological symptoms are different.

Persistent symptoms in one eye, recurrent significant headaches or vision that remains blurred away from screens also deserve professional assessment.

Screens are common enough that unrelated eye disease can easily be blamed on them.

The presence of a screen should never be allowed to explain away a concerning symptom.

Screen breaks also help the rest of the body

A screen break does not need to be only an eye exercise.

Standing up, walking a few steps and changing posture can reduce neck, shoulder and back loading at the same time that distance viewing relaxes near focus.

This integrated approach is more useful than treating eye strain, posture and sedentary behaviour as unrelated problems.

The same work pattern often creates all three: continuous sitting, continuous near focus and reduced blinking.

Night-time screen use is partly a sleep question

Screen use late in the evening can also affect sleep timing when bright light and stimulating content delay the transition to sleep.

That is separate from eye strain.

A person may have perfectly comfortable eyes yet still stay awake later because of light exposure, notifications or engaging content. Lowering brightness, using warmer display settings and setting a screen-free wind-down period may help some people sleep more consistently.

The useful distinction is that eye comfort and sleep health overlap around screens, but they are not the same biological problem.

Use screens intelligently, not fearfully

Screens are embedded in education, work, communication and entertainment. The realistic goal is not to eliminate them.

Use comfortable text size and lighting. Break long periods of near focus. Blink. Correct refractive errors. Arrange the workstation so the screen does not force awkward posture.

And recognise the limit of self-care.

Most screen-related eye strain is temporary and manageable. Healthy screen use is less about buying protective products and more about giving the visual system variation, enough moisture and appropriate optical correction.
