Good questioning is selective. Instead of treating every claim as suspicious, identify what matters, what evidence would establish it and which quick checks can reduce uncertainty most efficiently.

How to Question Information Effectively Without Distrusting Everything

The best question is not always “Is this true?”

Information arrives in different forms.

A statistic.
A photograph.
An expert quotation.
A causal claim.
A prediction.
A personal story.

Asking only “Is this true?” can be too broad.

A more useful first step is:

What exactly would need to be true for this claim to be reliable?

That turns suspicion into investigation.

1. Restate the claim precisely

Before checking evidence, identify the proposition.

“Coffee is good for you” is too vague.

Does the claim mean coffee drinkers live longer?
That caffeine improves alertness?
That coffee prevents a specific disease?
At what dose?
For which population?

A vague claim can survive almost any evidence because its meaning shifts.

Precision makes verification possible.

2. Identify the type of claim

Different claims require different evidence.

Existence claim: Did an event happen?

Quantitative claim: How much, how many or how often?

Causal claim: Did X produce Y?

Prediction: What is expected to happen?

Normative claim: What should happen?

Interpretive claim: What does an event or text mean?

Do not demand a randomised trial for a historical date or treat a personal anecdote as enough to establish population-level causation.

3. Ask what evidence is actually being offered

Look for the support.

Is it:

data;
a study;
a document;
a photograph;
an eyewitness;
an expert;
a link to another article;
an unnamed source;
a personal example?

Then ask whether that evidence can support the size of the claim.

One person's experience may show that something happened once. It cannot by itself establish that the same outcome is typical.

4. Investigate the source — away from the source

One of the most useful techniques for online information is lateral reading.

Instead of staying on an unfamiliar website and studying its design, About page or self-description, leave it.

Open new tabs.

Search for:

the organisation;
the author's background;
independent coverage;
funding or institutional affiliations;
whether reputable sources describe the site as credible, partisan, satirical, advocacy-based or unreliable.

Research by Sam Wineburg and Sarah McGrew found that professional fact-checkers used this strategy far more effectively than many students and academics when assessing unfamiliar websites.

5. Search the claim, not just the source

A credible source can make an error.

A poor source can occasionally state something true.

Search for the claim itself.

Look for independent confirmation.

For current events, identify whether multiple reputable outlets are reporting the same underlying fact or merely repeating one original source.

For scientific claims, look for the original study, systematic reviews or statements from relevant scientific institutions.

6. Check whether sources are independent

Five links are not five pieces of evidence if all five trace back to one press release.

Follow the chain.

Where did the number originate?
Who produced the image?
Which study is being cited?
Are multiple articles simply copying the same claim?

Source independence matters because repetition can create an illusion of corroboration.

7. Ask what is missing

A claim can be literally accurate and still misleading.

A graph may begin at a convenient year.
A percentage increase may hide a tiny starting number.
A study may report relative risk without absolute risk.
A political statement may omit the comparison group.

Ask:

Compared with what?
Over what period?
What is the denominator?
Which cases were excluded?
What would I expect to see if the claim were false?

These questions often reveal more than surface fact-checking.

8. Distinguish evidence from explanation

Suppose a school introduces a new teaching method and examination scores rise.

The rise is evidence.

“The teaching method caused the rise” is an explanation.

Other possibilities include easier examinations, a different student cohort or additional teaching time.

Questioning information means noticing when an observation has quietly become a causal story.

9. Use primary sources when the exact claim matters

If a news article says a court ruled something, read the judgment when feasible.

If a company announces earnings, inspect the filing.

If a research article is being discussed, look at the paper or abstract.

If a government publishes a statistic, find the statistical release.

Secondary sources are useful for explanation.

Primary sources are valuable when wording, numbers or legal detail matters.

10. Do not overinvestigate low-stakes claims

Verification has a cost.

You do not need a research project for every casual statement.

Match effort to consequence.

A claim that affects health, money, voting, legal rights or an important professional decision deserves more checking than a low-stakes trivia fact.

Efficient questioning asks:

How much uncertainty can I tolerate here?

11. Ask better questions in conversation

Questioning people does not require an interrogation tone.

Try:

What makes you think that?
Where did that number come from?
Is that based on one case or a broader pattern?
What would change your mind?
Is there another explanation?
Do we know that, or are we inferring it?

These questions expose reasoning without requiring immediate confrontation.

Question numbers by reconstructing them

Numbers can sound authoritative while hiding important choices.

When you see a percentage, ask:

Percentage of what?
What is the denominator?
How large was the starting value?
Is the change absolute or relative?
Was the sample representative?

If a risk rises from 1 in 10,000 to 2 in 10,000, that is a 100 percent relative increase and an absolute increase of one case per 10,000.

Both descriptions are mathematically correct.

Only one may be rhetorically emphasised.

Reconstructing the number protects against being persuaded by presentation alone.

Images and quotations need provenance too

A photograph can be real and still be miscaptioned.

A quotation can be authentic and still be stripped of context.

For important material, trace provenance.

Search for earlier appearances of the image.
Find the full speech, judgment, interview or document.
Check the date and location.
Confirm that quoted words belong to the person named.

The question is not only “Is this image or quotation fake?”

It is also “Does it support the claim being attached to it?”

12. Apply the same standard to claims you like

Verification is easiest when the claim annoys you.

The harder test is a claim that confirms what you already believe.

Before sharing a satisfying statistic or quotation, use the same checks.

Who produced it?
Is the source independent?
Can the number be traced?
Is the context intact?

Critical questioning becomes meaningful only when it applies symmetrically.

A three-minute online check

For a consequential unfamiliar claim:

Minute 1: clarify the claim and identify the original source.

Minute 2: open new tabs and investigate the source laterally.

Minute 3: search for independent evidence and contradictory reporting.

If the question remains unresolved, do not force a conclusion.

“Unverified” is a legitimate result.

Questioning information should reduce uncertainty, not maximise suspicion

The purpose of questioning is not to make everything doubtful.

It is to find the right level of confidence efficiently.

Strong evidence should increase confidence.
Contradictory evidence should reduce it.
Missing evidence should preserve uncertainty.

That is the difference between scepticism as a performance and scepticism as a method.
