How to Avoid Misinformation Online: A Verification Routine Before You Believe or Share

The goal is not to become impossible to fool

Everyone can be misled.

Expertise protects people in familiar domains and can create overconfidence elsewhere.

Misinformation also does not arrive wearing a label. It may be mixed with true facts, presented by a trusted contact or repeated by several accounts.

A realistic goal is therefore risk reduction.

Build a routine that makes false or unsupported claims less likely to move directly from screen to belief or from belief to share.

Step 1: Stop at emotional acceleration

If a post makes you instantly angry, delighted or shocked, pause.

Strong emotion is not evidence that the post is false.

It is evidence that you are in a state in which rapid sharing may feel especially rewarding.

Do not analyse the emotion. Simply delay the action long enough to check the claim.

Step 2: State the exact claim

A post may contain ten impressions and only one checkable proposition.

Write it mentally:

“Agency X changed rule Y on date Z.”

“Study A found treatment B reduced outcome C.”

“Photograph D shows event E in location F.”

Verification becomes much easier once the claim has boundaries.

Step 3: Find the original source

Screenshots are weak evidence because they remove provenance.

Find the original post, document, video, study, judgment or statistical release.

If you cannot find the origin, lower confidence.

Do not assume a screenshot is authentic because the typography looks right.

Step 4: Read laterally

Leave the page.

Search the source or account.

See how independent organisations describe it.

Stanford's Civic Online Reasoning work shows why this strategy matters: professional fact-checkers often evaluate unfamiliar sources by opening new tabs rather than spending long periods inside the original website.

Step 5: Look for independent confirmation

For important breaking claims, find whether several credible sources independently report the event.

Be careful with repetition.

Ten articles can all trace back to one anonymous post.

Independent evidence means different reliable routes to the same underlying fact.

Step 6: Check date, place and context

Old content is routinely recirculated as new.

A real protest image from 2019 may be attached to a 2026 claim.

A video from one country may be presented as another.

Check when and where the content first appeared.

For images, reverse-image search and frame extraction can help identify earlier versions.

Step 7: Read past the headline

Some misinformation is created by users sharing an exaggerated headline without reading the source.

Open the article.

Does the body support the headline?
Does the study support the article?
Does the data support the post?

Every step in the chain can add exaggeration.

Step 8: Pay special attention before sharing

Research by Gordon Pennycook and colleagues found that simple prompts directing attention toward accuracy can improve the quality of news people say they would share.

The practical lesson is not that an accuracy reminder solves misinformation.

It is that sharing decisions can be driven by goals other than truth - humour, outrage, identity or social approval.

Before forwarding, explicitly ask:

How confident am I that this is accurate?

Step 9: Learn manipulation techniques in advance

Another research approach is prebunking or psychological inoculation.

Instead of correcting one false claim after exposure, people are taught common manipulation techniques beforehand - such as false dichotomies, emotional manipulation, impersonation or conspiratorial framing.

Large online experiments have found that short inoculation videos can improve recognition of manipulation techniques.

The effects are not permanent. More recent research suggests that benefits can decay and may require booster exposure.

Step 10: Correct carefully when you were wrong

If you shared something false, delete or correct it visibly.

Do not quietly move on if others may have acted on the original post.

Corrections can reduce belief, although misinformation can remain influential after correction.

Use clear wording:

“I shared this earlier. The original claim was incorrect. Here is the verified information and source.”

Do not use one weak heuristic

Common shortcuts fail.

“.org means trustworthy.” - false.

“Many followers means credible.” - false.

“Verified account means the claim is true.” - false.

“Professional video means real.” - false.

“AI-generated means false.” - false.

Use a chain of evidence rather than one badge.

A 90-second sharing check

Before sharing a consequential post:

20 seconds: identify the exact claim and source.

20 seconds: open a new tab and investigate the source.

20 seconds: search for independent confirmation.

20 seconds: check date, context and original evidence.

10 seconds: ask whether your confidence is high enough to amplify it.

If not, do not share yet.

Use special caution with health, finance and legal claims

Some misinformation has higher consequences than others.

A false celebrity rumour is not equivalent to a false medical dosage, investment guarantee or legal deadline.

For high-stakes claims, raise the verification standard. Prefer official guidance, qualified professionals and primary authoritative sources rather than crowd consensus or influencer confidence.

The cost of being wrong should determine how much checking you do.

Do not confuse consensus with virality

Social proof is powerful. A post with millions of views can feel validated simply because many people have encountered it.

But reach measures distribution, not evidential quality.

A claim can spread because it is funny, frightening, politically useful or easy to repeat. The number of shares does not tell you whether the underlying evidence was checked.

When virality itself is the main reason offered for credibility, return to the original source and independent verification.

Treat breaking claims as provisional

The earliest version of a fast-moving event is often the least complete.

Initial casualty figures change. Identities are misreported. Videos are mislocated. Official statements are revised as evidence arrives.

For high-consequence events, separate what is confirmed from what is being reported provisionally.

Waiting for corroboration is not being late to the truth. It is recognising that information quality often improves after the first wave of attention.

Use fact-checks as evidence maps, not final authority

Professional fact-checking organisations can be useful because they trace sources, inspect documents and explain reasoning.

Still, read the evidence they provide. Strong fact checks show how the conclusion was reached and link to underlying records where possible.

This gives you two benefits: a quick assessment and a path back to primary evidence.

The aim is not replacing one authority with another. It is shortening the verification route.

Verification can end with uncertainty

Sometimes a claim cannot be confirmed quickly. In that case, the responsible conclusion is simply unverified. You do not need to choose between believing and disproving every post immediately.

The best defence is procedural

You cannot memorise every false claim that will appear next year.

You can learn a process that remains useful when the topic changes.

Pause.
Trace.
Compare.
Check provenance.
Think about accuracy before amplifying.

That does not make misinformation disappear.

It makes your own attention and sharing less available to it.
